Many people I know, including myself, spend a sizable portion of our waking hours toiling away at some unfulfilling job in order to make ends meet. Given that the rest of your day is spent eating, grooming, cleaning, or relaxing, that really only leaves the weekends to work on projects or enjoy more active hobbies. For many people around me, that would be things like cooking, crochet, sewing, and reading. For me, those hobbies include programming, tinkering, and playing several uninterrupted hours of whatever strategy game or open world RPG has my attention in a given month.
I have been assembling a small cyberdeck over the past few weeks by researching my expansions endlessly, and lobbing a couple of bucks from my entertainment budget at discount parts on the internet. The main component of the device is an 8gb model Raspberry Pi 5 that I have in the case that came with it as a bundle. The device accepts DC power from an adapter and has a small touch screen display that came with a nostalgic stylus. I have opted to run Raspbian as it has the best support for this display, but I am interested in trying Batocera or something similar in the future. For now, it will remain as a portable data terminal.
Projects like these could probably be finished more quickly if I had the time and money to dedicate to them, but I have other things to get done. I still need to eat and spend time with loved ones on the weekends. Chores and basic hygiene shouldn't be forgotten either. I don't even know how often I'll end up using it. Despite all that, I still feel the burning desire to finish what I started.
